Hillary Rodham Clinton Makes Me Smile

For we supporters of Senator Clinton, I think it time for some lighthearted joyousness.

(Senator Clinton does not have the time for this luxury as she is rather busy trying to convince people in Florida that they actually matter to the D.N.C. - a task that certainly requires seriousness since nobody at the D.N.C. seems to be doing or saying anything to help out. But, I digress...)

I am typing this on the plane home from Oregon, and I began because I realized that I am feeling rather happy. Then I realized why. I was thinking of things about Senator Clinton, her career, and her candidacy that make me smile. I'll list a few here. If you want to add any by commenting, feel free.
  • Whenever I picture Senator Clinton saying things like, at the end of this process, after all the votes have been cast, we will have a nominee whoever SHE may be. I not only smile at the phrase but at the evident glee with which Senator Clinton speaks it.
  • When I realize that Senator Clinton is one heck of a good campaigner. She may not love speechifying enormous crowds, but she clearly loves connecting with voters - whether it be five thousand at a time, five hundred at a time, or five at a time.
  • When I listen to the sheer intelligence that shines through Senator Clinton's every speech, every policy proposal, and every quip.
  • When I recognize the wisdom of her pragmatism and the genuineness of her idealism.
  • Whenever I appreciate again how Senator Clinton charts her own course, not out of an unwillingness or inability to listen to the counsel of others, but because after considering the counsel and opinions of others, her self-leadership guides her choices.
  • When I think of the serenity and confidence Senator Clinton radiates at the present moment.

I smile because I'm one of the lucky ones who realize how FUNNY Hillary Clinton is -- she has the absolute best, and most witty comebacks, and she has classic comic timing. She's genuine and warm and truly does care about what's best for this country. I've never believed in anyone before, but volunteering for this campaign has made me a lifelong believer in Hillary Clinton. I smile when I think about her because I realize, without ever trying to or saying she would, this woman changed my life. I can't imagine taking a week off and just lying on a beach somewhere: I'd rather take that week and go canvassing, or help Habitat for Humanity, or do some other voluntourist activity that gives me an adventure and does some good too. I'm nice to people I meet on the street or on the train now. All that phone banking and canvassing forced me to become a nicer, more patient, person who is a MUCH better listener. After spending so much time reading about healthcare issues, jobs, and the economic plight of so many in this country, I've gotten better at managing money, wasting less food, and generally not spending any time, money, or effort on stupid things, because I realize how many IMPORTANT things need to be tackled. So, I'm smiling pretty much uncontrollably right now because I realize Hillary Clinton is my hero -- and is an inspiration for me to become a better person, without me ever seeking that or being told I could find that through a media anointed candidate. She makes me smile because I'm a better man because of her, and this campaign: and I am TOUGHER, too, after seeing this remarkable woman fight so hard. I get up in the morning and run each day now, because I don't let my laziness stop me anymore. I think, "If Hillary Clinton can get up every day and do what she does, I can exercise." Laugh if you want, but I'm in the best shape I've been in since high school --- and it's because Hillary Clinton has awakened in me a never-quit spirit I never knew I had in me. She just amazes me, and I am so grateful I am here, alive in 2008, and poised to watch her STUN THE WORLD by beating the odds, winning the nomination, and becoming our first female President.

That's some of the millions of reasons Hillary Clinton makes me smile.

Hillary makes me smile because I know when she listens to me she hears me. She is so genuine and down to earth. This is what I want in a President. Not someone who is going to look down their nose at me because I am not an elite or latte drinker. I want to know that my President cares about me and I know that Hillary at POTUS will care about me. So I just keep smiling. Jane Austen

I smile when I see Senator Clinton smile because it amazes me that this incredible woman has the strength and gusto to continue fighting for me and every other American after all she has had to endure.

I smile because I realize she has made me want to be a better person. I smile because I realize she has become my "shero."

And I will continue to smile as I fight for her with all my heart because I know we need her.

I love the fact that she is running for President of the United States and she has a sense of humor. While I smile tremendously durning her victory speeches I really smile when she says something special about the state that she in in, like in WV when she opened with "It's almost Heaven..."

Senator Clinton makes me feel good inside. Sometimes during her speeches, I can't help but drift off into a deep sleep only to wake up missing her speech. She just makes me feel warmly relaxed. I feel utter joy at her smart humor. She sure knows how to be uniquely funny without it being at others expense. Like so many other Americans, I am fond of her. She is one class act. Americans would benefit greatly if she were the leader of the free world.

As an educator in an alternative high school, Hillary makes me smile because she wants to end No Child Left Behind. That will make my students and colleagues smile because we can get back to the business of learning rather than merely being test givers and takers. Hillary will also bring health insurance to everyone, greatly increasing attendance and graduation rates at schools were students and parents miss out on so much due to health issues. Smiling in Virginia because of this wonderful woman.

Hillary makes me smile because no matter how many times she has been counted out, disrespected, or vilified, she always manages to continue on her path with dignity and grace under fire that I have come to appreciate from the next president of the United States. Her drive and spirit are irrepressible, and I cannot help but smile when I know how this must affect her opponents.

Number 1:

Senator Clinton spoke in my town 2 days before our primary (PA). She was introduced by Governor Rendell, Jack Murtha, and a Penn State student--all of whom used the podium and had great things to say.

But when it was Hillary's turn, they took away the podium. She spoke--without any notes, without any teleprompter--for about 45 minutes straight. It was substantive, persuasive, passionate, and showed how experienced and ready she is for the White House.

Number 2:
Anytime we see Hillary with Chelsea, or Hillary with Chelsea & Dorothy, or just seeing Hillary talking about having Chelsea campaigning for/with her. Realizing that Hillary and Bill have established impressive, world-changing professional careers AND have raised an extraordinary daughter....

Hillary makes me smile, as well as take a huge sigh of relief and thanks, when I think When Hillary is President she will fight to make sure my son and the 40,000 other children that are born each year with Congenital Heart Defects will be able to have insurance when they are too old for their parents. I also know since Hillary believes in funding science, that someday other parents won't hear odds as bad as the one we hear today.
She makes me tear up when she looks at Chelsea with so much pride and Chelsea gives her the same look back.
I pray Nightly that Hillary becomes our President. We NEED Her.
Thanks Lyn

Hillary makes me smile, when she talks about the Democratic presidential nominee and says "whoever she is". I laughed out loud last night during her speech after winning Kentucky, when I heard that comment. It was such a "take that fellows" type comment. I agree with Carville when he says that if Hillary could give Obama one of her balls, they would both have a pair. I went to a fund raiser here in Greensboro, NC & heard her speak. My son asked why I found her impressive. My answer was with one word, "specifics". She identified every major problem in the country & gave a sensible way to deal with each one of them. Smarts, experience, shrewdness & incredible energy, along with a real desire to save a country in trouble, is all I need in a president. All these people who feel inspired & emotinal with her opponent can do as they see fit. I will be supporting the one with brains & proven integrity.

There are so many reasons why she makes me smile but the most important is she always says it is about us, the voters. When she says these words you know in your heart and soul she means it. These words are why she connects to me, I suspect it is the reason she connects to so many others too.

The second reason she makes me smile is her spunk. (I was described as spunky last night). Her spunk has renewed an energy in me that makes me smile. It was just a few weeks ago that someone mentioned since I became involved in helping Hillary, it was the most energy she has seen in me in years. Hillary has become part of my therapy which makes me smile everyday.

And probably the final reason is because she is a real leader amongst the other women in Congress. She knows how to get her done! Hillary is my role model, much like my sister who is nearly the same age as her.

*And as for Hillary - she makes me smile when she knows where the Great Lakes are located.
She also makes me smile when she has an answer for every question thrown at her - no kidding around.
She makes me smile when she comes out with one of her fast responses that makes one chuckle along with her.

Cheers all and keep on trucking!

*Hillary makes me smile, every time I see her say something like "I'm going to keep fighting as long as you keep standing with me."

Hillary makes me smile, every time I hear how much she's improved as this campaign has gone on. Every time I see her show her heart and brain are both firing on all cylinders, I smile very wide.

Hillary makes me smile, every time I see her trying to make efforts to reach out and connect to all different types of people. One candidate says they are for unity, but it's totally in how you approach things. I know the difference between an open invitation from a strong person, and an imperialistic command. I choose the connector, and every time I see her opening up as she stays strong, it really makes me smile.

Hillary makes me smile, every time she comes back like NH, NV, OH/TX.

Hillary makes me smile every time kicks rear in a contest like PA, IN, WV and KY.

Hillary makes me smile when someone asks her a question and she really, really answers that question.

Hillary makes me smile when I see her determined to see this through without whining, in good spirits, beaming with energy because that is leadership. It's not really how you sail a ship in the calm seas with a tug boat pulling you from the front and everyone else doing the work for you on deck. It's how you navigate through a storm after being blown off course that separates the real, amazing leader from the person who just wants to wear the Captain's uniform and take the pay check.

So the truth is, when I'm looking at Hillary Clinton, I'm almost always smiling.

Hillary makes me smile when.... I think about having a woman for President and know with absolute certainty that the ceiling will have not only a crack but a big hole in it. She makes me smile by showing that it's possible to combine strength, wit, flexibility, courage, steel, delicacy, and intelligence in a politician whose authenticity and passion I can trust. She makes me smile most, though, because she isn't going to quit before she's seen the process through, and that is worth the gold she is.

Hillary makes me smile because beneath the quiet, steady, determination lies a cacophony of concepts, larger than the issues at hand. While listening to a litany of policy and pundits, we watch one woman defying the false foundations of a civilization, divided by gender.

Where we expected frailty, we saw fortitude. Where we expected fear, we saw courage. Where we expected superannuated, we saw contemporaneity. Where we expected defeat, we saw victory. And, with each shattered expectation, we inched that much closer to reshaping the construct of humanity.

I smile for Hillary everytime she speaks and displays her integrity, her dedication, her grace, and her grace under fire, her tenacity and her willingness to go the distance because it's the right thing to do.
In her speech in Florida, she has elevated the issue of counting the votes in FL and MI from a campaign issue to a civil rights issue. There is no better role model for our daughters and granddaughters than Hillary can you not smile at that?!

Let me count the ways:

She has made me smile by just being the smartest person in the room, especially during the debates.

She made my husband pay attention to politics and it's hard to get him to pay attention to anything without batteries or a cord.

Her laugh and just all out toughness.

I smile when I think of how your smile lights up the world and travels along on air...embracing all who see it and know.
Your eyes dance with joy and love when you look at your husband and your daughter. That makes me smile.
I smile when I think of the story which will be written about the woman who dared, risked, fought, and met every challenge with tenacity and reverence.
You are the gracious one, the one who clears the path and sets the world on fire.
One cannot think of you without smiling - you are YOU.
Merci, gracias, thank you.

Sen. Clinton makes me smile a great deal for a number of reasons: her tenacity, her fortitude, her crazy smarts, her warmth, her gratitude, her caring, the fact that SHE REALLY GETS IT, for the opportunity to soon say "Madame President", for her pioneering the way for every woman and child, that she is my voice.
But the main thing that makes me smile is her belly-laugh. Every time she gets going I crack up!!! It's is so genuine and warm, you can't help but laugh right along with her!

She makes me smile because I know that she will fight to stop the over 20,000 that are suffering and dying every year from lack of decent health care with her whole plan that includes EVERYONE.

She makes me smile because she gets science - doesn't want to cut funding for NASA and wants to increase funding for basic science. We need that innovation for the future.

She also makes me smile with her sense of humor, her quick wit, and how she is able to tell the truth to misogynistic men in a way that they really can't attack back without looking idiotic. It's great to see them squirming, trying to figure out a way to be disrespectful without making it obvious.

Hillary makes me smile because she makes me feel connected--to her and to her supporters, whom I think of as my new community. At 76 I was spending too much time on sudokus and was close to depression, though I didn't recognize it. Now--WOW! Hillary has brought me back to life. Her strength, intelligence and tenacity made me believe I could contribute something. I began by writing and emailing friends; now I get up in the morning raring to go and spend much of the day reading blogs (I didn't even know what there were when I started). I write comments, write letters or emails to editors, the DNC, party officials, the media, columnists, etc. I'm loving it! My daughter and I talk politics on the phone at least once a day. (Big smile.) My memory is sharper, my house tidier, and I am more energetic. Thank you Hillary. I'm smiling now!!

With slightly amended lyrics from this way-back little ditty: "Everything he can do, she can do better! She can do everything better than him!"

And that makes me smile. Because it's true.

I mean, heck, I'd be tempted to support a woman for the highest office in the land even if she wasn't the best candidate. But what makes this moment in history so smile-worthy and so sweet is that I don't have to weigh my principles against one another because, in fact, Senator Hillary Clinton IS the best candidate in this race.

She is the hardest worker and the most prepared; she knows how to compromise and also how to fight, and she isn't afraid to do either; she demonstrates both genuine heartfelt empathy and gutsy in-your-face leadership when she speaks, balancing the nurturing traits of her gender with the inner toughness of 20 ordinary men; and I truly believe that her political aspirations are to serve others, not herself as some of her critics claim. Not to mention, she is stunningly smart!

For these reasons and more Senator Clinton will come to be known as one of the most inspiring female figures in American history, I am certain of it. She already is, if you ask me. And that makes me smile, too.

She makes me smile because she moves about the stage or the crowd with such grace, she speaks with an easy, ringing silvery tongue; with clear and crisp diction, she sounds elegant and cultured. Hillary makes me smile when she laughs so naturally! And she answers questions as smoothly as she speaks prepared statements. She smiles with her eyes and her whole being. If politics had a musical equivalent, it is Hillary speaking from the heart, such a grand lightness of being, it soothes the soul.
